Washington, D.C. in September is a breath of fresh air—literally and figuratively. As summer’s intensity begins to fade, the city settles into a golden sweet spot where warm days and cooler evenings make exploring a dream. The National Mall comes alive with picnics and sun-soaked strolls, and the monuments seem to glow under the soft light of early fall. It’s a perfect time to wander through Smithsonian museums without the peak-season crowds or catch an outdoor concert or festival. With tree-lined streets just starting to hint at autumn, and cozy cafés tucked into historic neighborhoods like Georgetown and Capitol Hill, September in D.C. offers a blend of cultural richness and seasonal charm that’s hard to beat.

Why D.C.?

We chose Washington, D.C. for our September stop after originally eyeing it for cherry blossom season—until the route said otherwise. But fall in D.C. is its own kind of magic, with the leaves starting to change and the city’s walkable, historic charm in full swing. Jake’s a groomsman in a nearby wedding that month, so the timing lined up perfectly. Beyond that, we’re excited to dive into world-class museums, stroll iconic neighborhoods, and maybe even kick off our own secret political agenda (Pogo for Prez 2028? Halle taking down Trump? Stay tuned). Plus, it’s close to Jake’s family in Philly, which makes it feel a little like home—even while we’re on the move.
