Packing Light, Thinking Heavy: The Prep Phase

Updated: 3 days ago

Almost everyone we tell that we are doing this trip looks at us with both jealousy and fear in their eyes.

Jealousy because of all of the unique cultures, food, nature etc. we will encounter on our travels. Fear because of the immense amount of planning and considerations.

What they fear is not the obvious and fun planning like choosing where, when, and what activities we will do. Rather what people fear is the more difficult and complex unknowns. The more you think about this idea beyond the surface level hypothetical the more real life gets in the way…

  1. How to get approval / stay successful at work?

  2. What to do with all our stuff?

  3. How to handle taxes?

  4. How about healthcare?

  5. How to get from one place to another and limiting PTO as much as reasonably possible?

  6. How can we travel safely with Mickey (Halle’s cat)?

  7. What additional insurance, if any do we need?

  8. Homesickness?

  9. Where will our mail go?

And perhaps the unknown I fear the most … can Halle really pack light?

The list really can go on and on but so far nothing we have encountered can’t be conquered when we really put our minds to it. I’m not going to get into all the specifics on exactly how we are approaching everything on this post, but I also don’t want to claim we know or have factored everything into the equation. So if you have any advice, additional considerations we may be not thinking about, or know anyone with a similar experience we can connect with please reach out!
